Humans have had many impacts on the environment. Especially on the rainforests and on the marine biome.

Rainforest

Rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace. Rainforests used to cover 14% of the earth’s surface, but now only cover 6%. This is largely in part to human development. It is estimated that 5-10% of species in these rainforests will disappear each decade.$^7$

Trees are cut down by logging companies in order to make timber, while paper industry uses this wood for pulp. In the amazon rainforest large scale agriculture industries, such as cattle ranching, clear huge amounts of forest. In the Congo rainforest, the forest has been cleared to make room for infrastructure projects. The main cause of the deforestation is either economic incentive by companies, or the development incentive for countries.$^7$

The main conclusion that we can draw, is that developing countries(where most of these rainforests are located) require the land for the development of their economies. Especially since many of these countries economies are based of natural resources.$^7$

Marine

There are four causes for the destruction of the marine biome: over fishing, seafloor damage, pollution, and ocean acidification.$^{10}$

Overfishing is when fishers begin to catch more fish than the sustainable amount calculated by fisheries biologists. This recommended amount is calculated such that it prevents the fish from being in the risk of long term population issues.$^{10}$

When water bodies are overfished, the population of certain fish will plummet. Since humans are far from the only creatures who depend on this population of fish, the natural predators of the fish population will also drop.$^{10}$

The practice of bottom trawling is when commercial vessels drag nets on the seafloor with weights. The goal being to capture shrimp, cod, and flounder. But anything on the seafloor gets captured. This results in the destruction of abiotic parts of the biome, and the killing of non-targets(sea turtles, seabirds, etc.).$^{10}$

As human global warming increases, the amount of carbon absorbed by the marine biome, increases. This increases the acidity of the biome. This increase in acidity makes the biome inhabitable for many creatures a majority of them being at or near the bottom of the food chain. As their populations decline, the entire food chain would begin to collapse, resulting in the mass destruction of marine life.$^{10}$
