A system is a set of process and interactions.$^0$ In general there are three types of systems, closed, open, and isolated. An open system allows both mass and energy to pass through the boundary of the system. A closed system allows only energy to pass through the boundary of the system. An isolated system allows neither.$^3$
The coastal system is an example of a open system. Looking at the coast as a system allows one to understand the process and interactions involved. Theoretically, the system will be in equilibrium, but human actions have an impact on this careful balance.$^3$
The river system is an example of a open system.$^0$
Riverine and coastal systems are dynamic systems where in the landscapes are developed with the interactions with winds, waves, currents, and sediments(both terrestrial and aquatic).$^0$
